Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.
Trial details and international connections
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.
Regional context and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
