2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure notified employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news follows a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game playtest was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a clearer brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our fans.
The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the time to ahead.
David
